Two Movies Recently Filmed in Historic Savannah, Georgia

Savannah has been buzzing with filming activities recently. Chris Evans (Captain America), Octavia Spencer (The Help) and the cast and crew of Gifted was in town shooting the movie earlier this fall. The production set up camp on Bull Street to film at the Bull Street Library.

Gifted is about Frank Alder (Chris Evans), an underachiever raising his gifted niece Mary after her mother (his sister) dies. Even though the setting of the movie is in rural Florida, most of the filming is done in Chatham County, North Beach and South Beach. The production was using a house in Tybee and a few other local businesses as film locations for Gifted.

Gifted is not the only production filming in Savannah this season. Ben Affleck's latest movie Live By Night has also booked the city as its film location. It's a mob/gangster movie set in Tampa Bay during the Prohibition era. The Live By Night production was filming at the Savannah's Railroad Museum and Fort Pulaski, and on Tybee Island. They also filmed at a private home on Tybee Island's Chatham Avenue.

Ben Affleck stars and directs Live By Night which also stars Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller and Chris Messina. The movie is based on a book of the same name authored by Dennis Lahane. Most of the filming activities for Live By Night has been along Georgia’s coast. In addition to filming in Chatham County, the production has also filmed scenes on Hampton Island in Liberty County and in Brunswick.

The Savannah region offers a variety of locations that includes the country's largest historical district, an evergreen urban forest, and timeless coastal and rural settings.

Savannah was the first planned U.S. city and to this day stills retains its original layout with 22 public squares, historical brick streets, and a famous architectural timeline dating back to 1733. The city is also well-known for its period locations that can easily double for 19th century U.S. or European cities. Savannah's marshes and swamps have even stood as Southeast Asia settings.

Other reasons that bring productions to Savannah are Georgia's competitive tax incentives, the city's growing infrastructure for the film industry, and the deep base of local film crew and professionals. The fact that Savannah is a film-friendly community that offers many free permits also help.

In addition to Gifted and Live By Night, Savannah has also starred in many other movies including The Longest Yard, Glory, Forrest Gump, Something To Talk About, The Conspirator, and Magic Mike XXL.
